3M Faces Its Earnings Moment With PFAS Still Unresolved

3M reports Q3 2026 before the market opens this morning, and the question is not whether the industrial conglomerate beats the number. It is whether beating the number is enough.

World’s Largest Investors Are Moving Their Money (Not Into AI)

While the media distracts you with stories about the next big AI IPO… The world’s largest investors are moving their money into one asset – at the fastest pace in a generation. This asset has crushed the S&P 500’s return over the past 12 months… More than TRIPLED the S&P 500’s return in 2025… and has outperformed the S&P 500 over the past 25 years by more than 1,100 percentage points. According to one Wall Street veteran, with over 40 years of professional investing experience… the biggest gains could be still ahead. That’s why he’s urging you to make one money move now.

Make One Money Move Now

The math the market is using: Wall Street expects 3M to post a quarterly EPS of $2.39, up 9.1% year over year, on revenue of $6.61 billion, representing 4.9% growth. The consensus reflects 14 analyst estimates, with EPS projections ranging from $2.35 to $2.45 and revenue expectations spanning $6.57 billion to $6.65 billion. That is a tight band, which tells you analysts have conviction on the operating trajectory, even if they disagree on the legal overhang.

Data

In Q2 2026, 3M posted adjusted EPS of $2.40, up 11% year over year, on GAAP sales of $6.5 billion, with organic growth of 5.4%. That result prompted management to raise full-year adjusted EPS guidance from $8.50-$8.70 to $8.80-$8.95. 3M has beaten the consensus EPS estimate in eight of its last eight quarters.

The complication lives beneath the adjusted line. In Q1 2026, changes in Solventum’s share price were a meaningful driver of the GAAP-to-adjusted bridge, the kind of volatility that makes reported earnings nearly unreadable without stripping the item out. That swing can recur each quarter until 3M’s stake is fully wound down, and its direction depends on where Solventum trades. Solventum used its Q2 results to announce plans to separate its Health Information Systems business, a move that introduces additional uncertainty into that valuation.

On the PFAS front, the water utility settlement is in administration, but the personal injury exposure remains open-ended. As of October 1, 2026, 15,264 actions are pending in MDL-2873, according to the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation. In August 2025, the court vacated the schedule for the first bellwether personal injury trial that had been set for October 2025, and no new trial date has been set. The parties continue to participate in court-ordered settlement discussions facilitated by a court-appointed mediator. That is not a resolved liability. It is an unquantified one.

3 Contrarian Stocks With Outsized Upside Potential

A trillion-dollar company cannot rise 100-fold without becoming larger than national economies. A small company can. That simple math is why legendary speculator Doug Casey continues to search neglected markets for opportunities. In a new free report, Casey reveals 3 stocks he likes right now and explains why the upside could greatly exceed the amount at risk.

Strategic Interpretation

This is not about whether 3M is a good business. It is about whether the market can assign a multiple to earnings when a material litigation tail is still unpriced. MMM currently trades at a forward 12-month P/E of 17.06 times, above the industry average of 14.45 times. That premium persists despite the legal uncertainty, which means any guidance cut or PFAS reserve addition would compress the multiple, not just the numerator.

JP Morgan cut its price target to $185 while UBS raised its target to $218, a $33 spread between two informed institutional views. That divergence is the market telling you the litigation discount is not agreed upon.

Options Market Analysis

The options market is pricing a defined move. Options are pricing roughly a 6% move around earnings.

Historical behavior matters here. In four of the past eight earnings events, MMM moved more than the implied move suggested. In July 2026 the stock moved 8.3% against a 5.1% implied move. In April 2026 it declined 2.8% against a 4.9% implied move. In January 2026, shares fell 7.0% versus a 5.1% implied move. The options market is frequently a floor, not a ceiling, on MMM earnings moves.

Structured Trade Framework

Bull case. For traders expecting a beat and an upward guidance revision, a defined-risk structure would be a long call vertical, buying the nearest out-of-the-money call expiring this week and selling a strike roughly 5% higher. The debit is capped, the reward defined. The trigger is EPS above $2.45 with reaffirmed or raised FY guidance.

Bear case. If you believe the PFAS personal injury litigation produces a reserve addition or guidance is trimmed on macro softness, a long put vertical, buying the nearest out-of-the-money put, selling a strike 4-5% lower, defines the risk. A break below the $158 level would confirm directional momentum.

Neutral/volatility case. Given elevated implied volatility relative to historical volatility, a short iron condor (selling an out-of-the-money call and put, buying further wings for protection) captures premium if the stock stays inside the implied range. The risk: MMM has exceeded its implied move in half its recent earnings events, so wing selection matters.

Risk Analysis

Three risks are non-negotiable to track. First: PFAS reserve disclosures. Any new accrual reduces adjusted EPS in a way the consensus does not model. Second: Solventum mark-to-market. The direction of that swing is not predictable from revenue or operating data. Third: guidance tone. Zacks notes that MMM’s Earnings ESP of -0.58% reflects the Most Accurate Estimate sitting below the consensus, a subtle signal that the sharpest analysts are not leaning toward a beat.

Forward Outlook

Strength in the Safety and Industrial and Transportation and Electronics segments, along with ongoing cost-control initiatives, are expected to support Q3 results. Those are the segments to watch on the call. Revenue in the Safety and Industrial division is expected near $3.12 billion. If the organic growth rate there comes in above 6%, the operating story holds. If it misses while litigation disclosures worsen, the premium multiple compresses fast.

Action Checklist

  • Confirm adjusted EPS vs. $2.39 consensus and GAAP EPS direction vs. Solventum mark-to-market
  • Check for any new PFAS personal injury reserve or accrual language in the press release
  • Monitor FY2026 guidance vs. current $8.80-$8.95 range, any change resets the model
  • Measure the actual opening move against the implied move to determine whether IV was fairly priced
  • Listen to CEO William Brown’s prepared remarks for language on litigation trajectory and organic growth confidence
  • Track Safety and Industrial segment revenue vs. the $3.12 billion estimate as the primary operating indicator
