Bonus Content: LVMH Reports Monday. China’s Golden Week Signal Weakens

A note from our friends at MarketWise(ad)

Hi,

If you’ve been waiting to get revenge on your bank…

For low interest rates… high fees… and rude customer service…

NOW is the time.

An alternative “AI Bank” is now available.

It pays 6% per year…

Charges you 0% fees…

And, crucially, gives you control of your money like never before.

This isn’t a crypto play, or anything to do with the blockchain…

It’s a revolution against traditional banking.

And the banks are terrified…

JPMorgan Chase and other major banks have been trying to stop it from happening behind the scenes…

But they’re failing.

And now more and more of these “AI banks” are popping up.

In fact, hundreds of thousands of Americans are already using this one – here’s how you can join them.

Regards,

LVMH Reports Monday. China’s Golden Week Signal Weakens

The question heading into Monday’s release is not whether LVMH will beat the number. It is whether the Fashion and Leather Goods division, the engine that generates about 75% of LVMH’s total operating profit, can sustain the fragile momentum it rebuilt in Q2. The answer hinges almost entirely on China, and China just delivered its weakest Golden Week spending per trip in four years.

Reuters reported that Chinese travelers’ average spending per trip fell to a four-year low during this year’s Golden Week holiday, dashing hopes that strong travel demand would spur a broader recovery in consumer spending. Average spending per domestic trip fell 1.9% to 893.92 yuan from 911.04 yuan a year earlier, according to Reuters calculations based on government data. That holiday window sits inside the quarter LVMH is set to report.

The Setup: Numbers vs. Trajectory

Analysts are looking for roughly €18.5 billion in quarterly sales, about 1% higher than a year earlier. For context: first-half revenue reached €38.6 billion, with organic growth of 2%, while reported revenue declined 3% as currency effects weighed on the comparison. Q2 Fashion and Leather Goods posted +1% organic growth, ending seven straight quarters of decline. Q3 must show sequential hold or improvement for the recovery thesis to survive.

It probably will not. A 20% tax levy may curb spending by ultra-high-net-worth Chinese shoppers, while mall data points to a sharp slowdown in mainland China, Bernstein analysts said. Citi data also flagged continued pressure in luxury spend into September. Two demand drains, same quarter.

Strategic Interpretation

Bernstein cut its price target to €480 from €520 while keeping a Buy rating, pointing to markedly weaker appetite for luxury goods in China. RBC downgraded to Sector Perform from Outperform on September 22, lowering its target to €475 from €575, citing softer macroeconomic conditions and flattening luxury demand in Q3. Jefferies also moved the same direction, lowering its target to €440 from €510 while keeping a neutral rating. Three cuts, three different shades of caution, and none of them optimistic about near-term growth.

In Q2, the market had been looking for a cleaner inflection in Fashion and Leather Goods. The actual +1% organic result was enough to stop the bleeding, but not enough to reset expectations higher. This revenue release lands against an even weaker macro read. Any result above flat organic growth in Fashion and Leather Goods would be a genuine surprise.

Sector Implications

LVMH is the sector’s leading indicator. Kering and Hermès both report October 22. China has told wealthy residents using offshore trusts to declare and pay years of back taxes by October 22, and luxury investors are watching closely as LVMH, Hermès, and Kering head into third-quarter updates. A weak LVMH print tied to China-sensitive demand sets the tone for the rest of the October luxury earnings window. The broader STOXX Europe Luxury 10 index was reported down about 19% year to date in early September.

Options Market Analysis

MC.PA’s 52-week range runs from €376.00 to €654.70, and the stock has recently traded near the low end of that band. Implied volatility typically rises into earnings-window events and compresses afterward, and this is no exception in the way options have been trading into the release. LVMH’s Q3 2026 revenue is scheduled for Monday, October 12, 2026 after the close of the Paris bourse, with a live audio webcast from 6 p.m. Paris time, which keeps event risk concentrated into a single decision window.

Positioning has leaned defensive into the event, consistent with recent price-target cuts and the Golden Week spending data. The risk remains asymmetric on the bear side. A miss on the Fashion and Leather line can gap the stock through the €376 area. A beat against lowered expectations with a constructive management tone could deliver a sharp relief move, but the bar for a durable upside surprise is high given the China read.

Structured Trade Framework

Bull case: Fashion and Leather Goods organic growth exceeds 2% in Q3 and management signals a sequentially improving trend into Q4. Goldman Sachs initiated with a Buy and a €500 price target in early October, framing its constructive view around a potential leather-goods rebound from 2027 onward. For traders expecting a rebound, a defined-risk bull spread, buying the €395 call and selling the €415 call into late-October expiry, caps cost while keeping upside exposure defined.

Bear case: Fashion and Leather Goods delivers flat or negative organic growth and management declines to guide constructively on Q4 China. A put spread, buying the €375 strike and selling the €360 strike into late-October expiry, profits from a move to the yearly low and below, with defined maximum loss. This structure limits the cost of a surprise beat.

Neutral case: The revenue figure lands near consensus but the messaging is cautious. An iron condor around the near-term expected move, for example selling downside premium and upside premium while buying further-out protection on both wings, seeks to capture post-event volatility compression while defining maximum risk.

Risk Analysis

The primary risk to every structure is management commentary that diverges sharply from the revenue line in either direction. Q3 revenue can look weaker even when underlying appetite has not disappeared, which raises the odds of volatile reactions to both beats and misses. Currency drag remains a second-order risk. In the first half, profit from recurring operations fell on a reported basis, and management pointed to a currency impact of roughly €700 million.

Forward Outlook and Action Checklist

Street targets still sit well above the current share price, a gap that signals how much skepticism is already embedded in the tape. What the market is still vulnerable to is a second leg lower if China spending per head continues to deteriorate into Q4 and the Fashion and Leather Goods recovery thesis breaks again.

  • Monitor Fashion and Leather Goods organic growth versus the +1% Q2 baseline, any negative print reopens the multi-quarter decline thesis
  • Watch management language on China Q4 trajectory and the October 22 tax deadline impact
  • Track Kering and Hermès reactions on October 22 for sector read-through confirmation
  • Re-check positioning before the post-close release on Monday, October 12, 2026, and the 6 p.m. Paris time webcast, post-release volatility compression can change payoffs quickly
  • Key support: €376; key resistance on any relief move: €400, then €446
