The Options Market Has a Question for Alphabet

What the derivatives market is pricing ahead of tomorrow’s Q2 report.

First a note from The Oxford Club

Dear Reader,

Last year, OpenAI lost $39 billion.

SpaceX lost $4 billion in a single quarter.

Meanwhile, a company most investors have never heard of is projected to make $559 million in profit.

In one quarter.

The same company grew revenue from $1 billion for a full year… to $50 billion.

It serves over 300,000 business customers – including Uber and Netflix.

And it generates $8 million in revenue per employee. Nearly 15X more than Microsoft.

It’s about to go public in what Wired is calling potentially “the largest IPO ever.”

Alexander Green – who called Nvidia at 11 cents, Apple at 20 cents, and Netflix at $2 (all split-adjusted) – says this is the most important call of his career. And he’s found a secret backdoor in before the IPO.

Watch his special video presentation now – company name, backdoor details, and a free ticker all included:

Good investing,

P.S. The IPO announcement could come as soon as September 29. After that, this opportunity is gone. Watch now.

The Options Market Has a Question for Alphabet

The Signal

Something worth paying attention to showed up in the options market today. Not just elevated volume on Alphabet (GOOGL) — that part is expected ahead of earnings. What stands out is the shape of the activity: calls are outpacing puts at roughly a 9-to-4 ratio, traders are paying approximately 2x as much for upside calls as for downside protection, and short-dated implied volatility has surged to nearly 60% — a figure that sits far above where GOOGL’s realized volatility has been running in recent weeks.

That gap matters. When implied volatility climbs that far above historical volatility, the options market is not simply reacting to uncertainty. It is pricing in the expectation that something meaningful will be revealed. The question is whether that expectation is calibrated correctly — or whether the market has overbuilt the premium ahead of a report that may confirm what is already largely understood.

Alphabet reports Q2 2026 results after the close on Wednesday, July 22. This is the editorial for the session before that report drops.

Why It Matters

Alphabet is not just another tech earnings report. It functions as a bellwether for the global AI investment cycle. What the company says about cloud revenue conversion, Gemini monetization, and capital expenditure trajectory will be used by institutional investors to frame expectations across the entire sector — not just for GOOGL itself.

That is precisely why sophisticated participants are not waiting for the number to come out. They are positioning now, through options, in ways that reveal how they are thinking about risk and reward before the market has a chance to react.

The 9-to-4 call-to-put ratio in GOOGL options ahead of this report is not random. Traders are paying about 2x as much for upside calls as for downside protection, suggesting a bullish lean. The skew toward calls does not guarantee a positive reaction — markets are not votes — but it does tell you something about where the weight of speculative money is currently sitting.

Slight tangent, but it matters: the last time GOOGL reported — Q1 2026 on April 29 — the stock gained 10% the following session. Since that announcement, GOOGL stock has drifted roughly 9.3% lower. So heading into Wednesday, the stock has already partially erased its post-Q1 pop. That drift creates an interesting setup for options buyers: they are not chasing elevated prices. They are positioning into a pullback, which is a different kind of risk than chasing momentum.

Alert: The DeFi Token Set to Explode as Markets Recover

Major institutions are fighting to acquire this DeFi protocol before prices surge in the post-tariff rally that’s already beginning. This isn’t speculation – this platform’s role is so essential to crypto’s financial system that its current price defies all logic.

Just Released: The DeFi token set for massive gains as markets heat up – only $3!

The Company Behind the Signal

Here is the fundamental picture, as cleanly as it can be stated.

Alphabet’s Q1 2026 results showed revenue of $109.9 billion, up 22% year over year, with diluted EPS of $5.11 and net income of $62.6 billion. That looks exceptional on the surface. But there is an important asterisk. Approximately $37.7 billion of other income — including unrealized mark-to-market gains on Alphabet’s minority equity stakes in Anthropic and SpaceX — drove nearly all of the earnings beat. Stripping this out, EPS would have missed the consensus estimate of $2.63 by a cent.

The part of the business that matters to long-term investors is Google Cloud. The segment grew 63% year over year in Q1 to $20.03 billion, crossing the $20 billion quarterly threshold for the first time, and the backlog nearly doubled sequentially to $462 billion. Management stated that just over half of that backlog should convert to revenue over the next 24 months, making the Q2 Cloud growth rate the cleanest read on whether that conversion is on schedule.

Google Cloud’s operating margin widened to 32.9% in Q1 from 17.8% in the year-ago period — a margin expansion story that Wall Street has been rewarding across the sector. The question for Wednesday is whether that margin trajectory holds under the weight of rising capital expenditure commitments.

Alphabet raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance in April to between $180 billion and $190 billion. That number is not a rounding error. It is a declaration of intent about how aggressively the company is betting on AI infrastructure. And markets have been trying to decide, for months now, whether that spending will generate returns fast enough to justify the multiple.

One additional wrinkle heading into the report: despite delays in the Gemini 3.5 Pro AI project, Google’s dominance in consumer AI and non-coding applications remains largely intact. But the delay attracted legal scrutiny and knocked sentiment in the weeks before the report. That noise may be priced in — or it may resurface if management commentary on Wednesday fails to reassure on AI timelines.

What the Options Market Is Pricing

The options market is pricing a potential swing of up to 5.56% in either direction by week’s end following the report, with implied volatility running at nearly 60%, well above realized volatility — indicating the market is bracing for a larger-than-typical move.

Is that expectation reasonable? Here is the calibration check. GOOGL’s average one-day earnings move over the trailing 12 quarters is approximately 4.8%, with extremes including a 10.22% jump after the April 2024 report and a 9.51% drop after October 2023’s Cloud-related disappointment. So the current implied move of roughly 5.4% sits modestly above that historical average — but it is nowhere near the tail scenarios the stock has demonstrated it is capable of.

That calibration matters because it shapes strategy. If the market were pricing in, say, 9% to 10%, you might argue the implied volatility is too rich relative to history and that premium sellers have an edge. At 5.4%, the math is less decisive. The implied move is elevated relative to calm periods but not dramatically out of line with what the stock has actually delivered in recent quarters.

Prediction markets assign a 96.6% probability that Alphabet delivers another earnings beat, which would mark the fifth consecutive quarter of exceeding consensus estimates. Wall Street sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with 49 of 54 analysts rating the stock a Buy or Strong Buy, zero Sell recommendations, and a mean price target near $434 — implying roughly 25% upside from current levels.

What to watch for in the reaction: the GAAP EPS number, inflated as it likely will be by the Anthropic markup, will probably land in the beat column almost regardless of how the actual business performed. What decides the direction of the reaction is guidance, not the headline number. Specifically, any commentary that suggests AI spending is accelerating faster than revenue generation will be read as a negative — regardless of whether EPS clears the bar. Any commentary that demonstrates margin sustainability alongside continued Cloud growth above 60% is likely to push the stock toward the upper range of the implied move.

The earnings expectations heading into Wednesday: Wall Street expects EPS of $2.87, up nearly 24% from $2.31 a year ago, and revenue of roughly $116.5 billion, up nearly 21% year over year. Operating income is expected to grow faster than revenue, with margin expanding by nearly 3 percentage points to 35.3%, reflecting continued operating leverage from Cloud’s scale-up.

25-Cent Gold Explorer Set to Drill Top Canadian Mineral Belt

A major fully funded drill campaign is set to launch on a district-scale gold discovery in one of the safest and most mining-friendly mineral districts on Earth.

This ultra low-priced explorer — currently trading below US$0.25 per share — already controls a multi-million-ounce gold inventory in a top Canadian gold belt as it sets its sights on the next phase of growth via the drill bit.

Backed by a newly strengthened treasury, multiple high-priority expansion targets, and exposure to one of the strongest gold markets in history, this soon-to-be-known small-cap is entering its most important phase yet.

More details here

Strategic Considerations

Three frameworks are worth thinking through here. None of them constitute a recommendation — they are analytical lenses for how different participants might approach the current positioning landscape.

Bull Case Framework

For traders expecting Alphabet to deliver strong Cloud numbers, margin expansion, and constructive guidance on AI monetization, the options market’s bullish skew confirms that call buyers are already leaning this way. A long call or bullish call debit spread positioned just above the current stock price would express directional conviction with defined risk. The value of a debit spread in this environment: it reduces the premium cost significantly, which matters when implied volatility is running at nearly 60%. You are giving up uncapped upside, but you are also not paying for the volatility premium in full. The risk with this approach is that even a strong report may produce a muted reaction if the result is largely anticipated. Prediction markets already assign a 96.6% probability of a beat — meaning the beat itself may not move the stock; only what the beat reveals about forward trajectory would generate meaningful upside.

Bear Case Framework

For traders focused on downside risk — particularly around the Gemini delay, capex expansion, or any sign that AI spending is compressing margins — a long put or put debit spread offers defined-risk bearish exposure. The risk here is paying elevated implied volatility for a move that may not materialize at the scale priced in. The thesis-breaker on the downside would be operating margins falling while cloud growth decelerates and capex guidance stays aggressive — turning AI into a cost center rather than a growth engine. That scenario remains plausible but is not the base case reflected in options flow.

Volatility-Neutral Framework

This is perhaps the most intellectually honest position given current conditions. The post-earnings drop in implied volatility — what options traders refer to as IV crush — is a consistent feature of GOOGL earnings cycles. When IV runs at nearly 60% heading into a report and the stock moves 5% or less in either direction, options buyers often find that their premium erodes faster than the directional move compensates for. Selling premium through an iron condor or short strangle captures that dynamic directly. The risk is that a genuine surprise — in either direction — breaks through the wings of the structure. A well-placed iron condor with strikes outside the implied move range defines that risk in advance.

The part people often skip: the choice between these frameworks is not just about directional view. It is about how confident you are in your read on the IV premium itself. If you believe 60% IV overstates the likely move, premium selling deserves consideration. If you believe Cloud can deliver a genuine upside surprise that exceeds what the options market has priced, buying calls with a tight cost structure makes more sense. These are not the same question.

A Secondary Signal Worth Watching: IPX

While the dominant options story today centers on Alphabet, one other name generated unusual activity that deserves mention — not because the dollar volume is large, but because the ratio is extraordinary.

IperionX Ltd. (IPX) saw option volume running at approximately 146 times the daily average today, with traders primarily targeting the August 21st $30.00 call. Volume on this contract reached 2,339 versus open interest of just 41 — meaning nearly all activity represents fresh positioning. The bulk of the transactions consisted of blocks bought at various times for between $0.45 and $0.60 each, suggesting bullish intent.

The context matters here. IperionX is engaged in the development of mineral properties in the United States, holding a 100% interest in the critical minerals Titan project, which has resources of titanium, zircon, and rare earth mineral resources in Tennessee. The company secured a significant SBIR Phase III contract from the U.S. Department of Defense worth up to $99 million, structured as an Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity contract focused on achieving low-cost domestic titanium for defense applications.

More recently: on July 1, 2026, IperionX completed its acquisition of the Camden critical mineral, real property and infrastructure assets for approximately $3 million, including land, mineral rights, stockpiles and industrial infrastructure adjacent to the Titan Project. Camden surface stockpiles return exceptional grades up to 23% THM — more than 8 times higher grade than the Titan Project average — positioning IperionX to accelerate strategic titanium, zircon, and heavy rare earth feedstocks to the U.S.

Whether today’s unusual call activity reflects informed positioning ahead of additional contract news, a response to the recently completed Camden acquisition, or something else entirely is not clear. What is clear is that someone placed a meaningful number of out-of-the-money August calls relative to the existing open interest — and they did it in a way that signals urgency. The $30 strike represents a move of more than 20% from the current price. That is not conservative hedging. That is a speculative bet on a defined catalyst within a defined window.

For a name this small and this thinly traded in the options market, a 146x volume day is the kind of signal that warrants a second look — not blind action, but attention.

What to Watch

On GOOGL — the items that will determine whether the reaction lands at the upper or lower end of the implied move:

  • Google Cloud Q2 revenue growth rate vs. the 63% Q1 pace and the consensus expectation of approximately 60% to 63% growth. Deceleration here, even modest, will be read negatively.
  • Operating margin trajectory. Operating margin is expected to expand by nearly 3 percentage points to approximately 35.3%. Any compression relative to that number changes the story.
  • Capital expenditure commentary. Full-year capex guidance stands at $180 billion to $190 billion. If management signals further increases, the market will want to see explicit revenue justification alongside that guidance.
  • Gemini monetization timeline. Any concrete update on when Gemini moves from cost to contributor will matter more than the delayed Gemini 3.5 Pro headline itself.
  • The Anthropic and SpaceX equity stakes. Unrealized mark-to-market gains on minority equity stakes drove nearly all of last quarter’s EPS beat. If these reverse or compress in Q2, the headline EPS number could disappoint even if the underlying business performs well. Watch for analysts to strip this line out immediately in their commentary.
  • Cloud backlog conversion. Google Cloud’s backlog nearly doubled quarter over quarter to more than $460 billion as of Q1. Q2 will be the first test of how efficiently that backlog translates into recognized revenue.

On IPX — watch for any news release between now and the August expiration regarding additional DoD task orders, contract funding tranches, or resource definition results from the Camden drilling program. If any of those catalysts materialize, the August $30 calls that were bought today would gain significant value quickly. If nothing emerges before expiration, the premium paid evaporates entirely.

The risk that defines both situations: the options market has already done its work. The premiums reflect what is expected. The actual question is whether the events, when they arrive, exceed, match, or fall short of those expectations. That gap — between expectation and reality — is where options traders live.

Pilots Use One. Smart Traders Should Too.

A pilot never takes off without running a checklist. Not because they don’t know how to fly – because they know that the moment something feels routine is the moment a step gets skipped.

Options trading punishes skipped steps faster than almost anything else. So, I put the 7 that matter most on one page.

It’s called the Smart Trade Options Checklist. Normally $29.97. Free today.

Run it before any options trade. Takes about 30 seconds. You’ll catch the bad ones before they cost you.

Tactical Checklist

  • GOOGL implied move: approximately 5.4% in either direction post-earnings July 22
  • GOOGL IV: running near 60% short-dated, well above realized volatility — IV crush is likely post-report regardless of direction
  • Options flow bias: calls leading puts 9-to-4; call buyers paying 2x vs. put buyers — bullish lean but not extreme
  • Historical context: average one-day earnings move of 4.8% over trailing 12 quarters; extremes of +10.22% and -9.51% both on record
  • Consensus Q2 expectations: EPS of approximately $2.87 (up ~24% YoY), revenue near $116.5 billion (up ~21% YoY)
  • Key risk: GAAP EPS inflated by Anthropic/SpaceX mark-to-market; operating income is the cleaner business read
  • Defined-risk structures align with this environment: debit spreads reduce premium cost when IV is elevated; iron condors capture expected IV crush with bounded downside risk
  • IPX unusual activity: 146x average daily options volume; August $30 calls targeted aggressively; watch for DoD contract news or Camden resource results as potential catalysts before expiration
