Bonus Content: SLB Reports Into $113 Brent. Its Earnings Keep Falling Anyway.

A note from our friends at Investors Alley(ad)

Hi, Tim Plaehn here.

Nvidia is one of the biggest winners of the AI boom.

But if you bought it for income…

You’d collect a dividend yield of about 0.5% a year.

I found another way to collect income from AI stocks like Nvidia…

Using one small fund that pays investors every single Thursday.

Its annualized distribution rate has been 34%.

And it could deliver up to $1,051 in a single month.

See here how it works.

To your income,

Tim Plaehn

SLB Reports Into $113 Brent. Its Earnings Keep Falling Anyway.

Brent crude settled at $113.17 on Thursday, its highest close in five months, after oil prices climbed about 4% to a five-month high following Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia that stoked concerns of further disruption to energy supplies from the key exporting region. By Friday morning, missiles were targeting Riyadh and Brent had pushed near $114 a barrel, with futures up about 0.6% to roughly $113.90 by 03:30 GMT. That backdrop hands SLB a gift-wrapped macro headline going into its Q3 report before the open today.

Markets don’t need a perfect earnings quarter. They only need a number that doesn’t disappoint a consensus already braced for year-on-year deterioration. That is exactly the low bar SLB faces this morning, and it is still not clear the company will clear it.

The Numbers

Consensus has SLB posting $0.62 per share on $9.27 billion in revenue. In the same quarter a year ago the company earned $0.69 on $8.93 billion. Last quarter SLB reported $0.55, beating the $0.51 estimate. The trajectory is unambiguous: revenue inches up, profit shrinks.

In Q2, EPS excluding charges and credits of $0.55 increased 6% sequentially but decreased 26% year on year. Adjusted EBITDA of $1.90 billion declined 7% year on year. That is the services cycle in plain arithmetic. Oil hit a five-month high in May. EPS was down 26%. Oil is at a five-month high again today. The same divergence is the base case unless management surprises on margin.

The Zacks Consensus EPS estimate has been revised about 2.19% lower over the last 30 days, and the Most Accurate Estimate sits below the Zacks Consensus, producing an Earnings ESP of -1.45%. SLB has beaten the Zacks Consensus in each of the trailing four quarters, delivering an average beat of 4.94%. That streak is well-known, and well-priced.

Why the Stock Has Not Followed Crude

This is not about oil prices. It is about the lag between exploration capital decisions and services revenue. SLB has been the laggard in its own peer group, with Baker Hughes, Halliburton, and TechnipFMC outperforming it over the comparable stretch. Shares have faced ongoing selling pressure leading into today’s report, anticipating elevated volatility. The stock closed at $49.55 on October 22, down 3.03% on the session alone, even as crude added about 4%.

Ahead of today’s release, Citigroup cut its price target from $63 to $62, Piper Sandler slashed from $64 to $63, and Barclays trimmed from $67 to $66. All three maintained Overweight or Buy ratings. The consensus remains constructive on the long cycle, but near-term EPS trajectory forced the hand on targets. Across 30 analysts, the average rating is Buy with a 12-month price target of $62.41, implying roughly 26% upside from Wednesday’s close.

Sector Read-Across

HAL and BKR report within the next two weeks. SLB’s commentary on international capex, North America activity, and digital segment margin will set the tone for both. If SLB guides cautiously on Q4 services volume despite the crude spike, expect renewed pressure across OIH. If the digital and Production Systems segment offsets margin compression, as it did in Q2, when those units drove the beat, the sector may catch a bid even on in-line top-line numbers.

Options Market

SLB implied volatility sits around the high-30% range, with an IV rank frequently cited in the upper half of its 52-week range ahead of this report. ATM IV has recently been quoted around 40.9% against a 20-day historical volatility near 24.8%, a spread that makes premium selling structurally attractive if the post-earnings move compresses back toward realized vol.

At Q2 earnings on July 24, the pre-earnings implied move was 7.66%, the stock moved 11.01%, an outside move that returned 73.33% to straddle holders. At Q1 on April 24, the implied move was 8.38% and the actual close-to-close move was 2.57%, an inside move that cost straddle buyers 1.95%. Two quarters, two opposite outcomes, both within the same IV rank band. The options market is not reliably pricing direction; it is pricing uncertainty about a business cycle that has decoupled from the commodity.

Put IV on the 60-day tenor has been quoted at 37.15% versus call IV at 36.43%, producing a put-call IV ratio of 1.02 and open interest put-call ratio near 0.95, close to neutral, with a marginal lean toward downside protection.

Structured Trade Framework

Bull case. SLB beats $0.62 on digital segment outperformance and raises H2 free cash flow guidance. For traders expecting that outcome, a defined-risk structure would be a November $50/$55 bull call spread, capping risk to the debit paid while targeting the analyst consensus gap toward $62.

Bear case. SLB meets or misses the number and guides Q4 revenue below the services recovery curve implied by $113 Brent. A November $48/$45 put spread offers defined downside exposure. Technical analysis places an expected near-term range of $47.18 to $50.07, with elevated probability of further downside if guidance disappoints.

Neutral case. IV at the 63rd percentile and the Q2 straddle’s 73% return make premium collection tempting, but the Q2 outside move is a clear reminder of gap risk. A defined-risk iron condor, short the $47/$45 put spread and short the $52/$54 call spread in November, collects theta while containing exposure to a repeat of that 11% move.

Risk Analysis

The central risk to any short-volatility approach is a geopolitical escalation that accelerates the services cycle faster than expected, or a miss that restarts the year-on-year EPS decline story. Houthis have claimed multiple strikes on Saudi energy, airport, and military targets, and the International Energy Agency has agreed to accelerate releases tied to its March 2026 collective action, including more than 20 million barrels of diesel. A ceasefire that drains the geopolitical risk premium from crude would remove SLB’s only near-term tailwind.

Forward Outlook and Checklist

SLB has guided for higher free cash flow in the second half of 2026 and committed to returning more than $4 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks. Full-year EPS is expected to grow 28.63% next year, from $2.48 to $3.19 per share. The long cycle thesis remains intact. The near-term gap between that thesis and reported earnings is what the options market is pricing today.

  • Watch Q3 EPS vs. $0.62 consensus and Q3 revenue vs. $9.27 billion.
  • Monitor digital and Production Systems segment margin for the beat driver.
  • Track Q4 revenue guidance against the H2 recovery implied by current Brent levels.
  • Confirm ATM IV compression post-open before entering any short-volatility structure.
  • Treat HAL and BKR as read-across proxies for the sector guidance tone.
  • For defined-risk long exposure: November $50/$55 call spread. For defined-risk short exposure: November $48/$45 put spread. For neutral: iron condor bounded at $45/$47 and $52/$54.
