November 5, 2026
The options market priced a 14.7% move. The actual drop blew past it. Here is what the guidance actually says, and how to position from here.
Markets do not punish bad quarters. They punish guidance that disrupts a growth story investors were paying a premium to own. That is precisely what happened to Datadog on November 4, 2026.
The Energy Stock Trump Once Called “A Big Mistake” to Mess With
When a U.S. ally tried to tax ONE American energy company…
Trump didn’t hesitate to issue a direct warning.
Now this same company is generating over $3 billion in operating income…
And partnering with the hottest AI stock on Wall Street.
Out of 23,281 publicly traded stocks, this is the ONLY one that meets all the “unicorn” criteria.
Datadog posted Q3 2026 earnings on November 4, 2026, reporting non-GAAP EPS of $0.81, which beat analysts’ consensus estimates of $0.64 by $0.17. Quarterly revenue rose 35.2% year-over-year to $1.20 billion, above analyst estimates of roughly $1.14 billion. Non-GAAP operating margin expanded to 28% from 23% a year ago, as non-GAAP operating income rose to $334 million. Free cash flow came in at $251 million. The stock fell roughly 18% on the day.
The Guidance Math
The company’s guidance for Q4 projects revenue between $1.19 billion and $1.20 billion, aligning roughly with analyst forecasts and implying a slowdown in growth to roughly 25% to 26% from Q3’s 35%. That is the number that broke the trade. But the deceleration is concentrated, not broad.
Datadog faces a near-term revenue headwind from its largest customer, as Q4 guidance assumes their usage will be at the minimum commitment level. CFO David Obstler explained that the largest customer spent above the minimum commitment in Q3, but Q4 guidance only includes the minimum commitment. Excluding the largest customer, management said Q4 revenue growth implied in guidance is in the low-to-mid 30% range. Early renewals with large AI customers can secure higher commitments but lower pricing, creating near-term revenue headwinds.
We also ended with about 4,860 customers with an ARR of $100,000 or more, up from about 4,060 a year ago. These customers generated about 91% of ARR. The underlying business is not broken. One customer is.
The Silver Mine Elon Needs
365 million ounces. That’s how much silver one American mine has produced since 1884.
And a permitted refinery sits 1 mile away.
Starting January 1st, Washington squeezes Chinese suppliers out of America’s solar factories. American silver becomes the prize.
The company trades on the NYSE. And Elon’s factories haven’t started buying yet.
The Options Market Was Right to Be Nervous
DDOG options implied a move of plus or minus 14.7% for the November 4 earnings report, as of October 28, 2026. DDOG’s actual earnings move exceeded the options-implied move in 10 of its last 17 reports. The realized decline of roughly 18% blew past that implied range, confirming the market had uncertainty priced in, but could not fully model the guidance construction.
Post-event, DDOG’s at-the-money implied volatility is 79% for the November 27 expiration against 55% realized volatility over the last 30 trading days, a volatility premium of 23.8 percentage points. IV has not fully collapsed. That matters for structure selection.
Sector Contagion Was Contained
On the day, MongoDB slid 2.97% and Snowflake dipped 2.84%, while Dynatrace fell 2.68% and Elastic dropped 2.50%. Those smaller declines suggest the selling was concentrated in Datadog, with only modest spread across cloud software. Dynatrace grew revenue 17.43% last quarter, less than half Datadog’s pace, yet trades at a fraction of the valuation. Even after the drop, DDOG trades near 70x the center of its fiscal 2026 non-GAAP EPS guidance of $2.73 to $2.75. Compression risk has not been fully resolved.
Structured Trade Framework
With IV still elevated post-event and the stock sitting roughly 18% lower than its prior close, three scenarios are worth modeling.

Bull case: The largest customer spends above minimum in Q4, management’s conservative framing becomes a catalyst, and the core business’s accelerating cohorts reassert. For traders expecting a rebound to the $210 to $220 range over 30 to 60 days, a defined-risk structure such as a bull call spread using December or January expirations captures upside while limiting exposure to residual IV. The still-elevated IV makes buying naked calls expensive; spreads compress the premium cost.
Bear case: The largest customer headwind persists into Q1 2027, early renewals at lower pricing compress net retention from the low 120s, and the valuation at 70x forward non-GAAP EPS cannot hold at slower growth. If you believe growth decelerates further, a put spread targeting a move toward $170 defines the risk without requiring a catastrophic outcome.
Neutral case: The term structure remains inverted, with near-term options richer than later ones. A short iron condor or calendar spread captures premium decay if the stock consolidates in the $185 to $205 range. Post-event crush will reduce IV over days, so entry timing is critical.
Risk Analysis
In Q3 2026, Datadog said its largest customer reduced their usage, while usage remained above the minimum commitment. That is now documented in the company’s quarterly filing. It is not a rumor. The bull thesis requires that customer to re-accelerate or the rest of the platform to absorb the gap. Remaining performance obligations of $3.85 billion grew 38% year-over-year, which suggests committed future revenue remains robust, but usage-based models can still undershoot committed levels.
Action Checklist
- Q4 revenue guidance of $1.19 billion to $1.20 billion implies roughly 25% to 26% growth. Excluding the largest customer, management said the implied rate is low-to-mid 30s.
- Options-implied move of 14.7% was breached. Post-event IV at 79% (at-the-money, Nov. 27) still exceeds realized vol of 55%, favoring spreads over naked directional buys.
- Bull defined-risk: December or January bull call spread. Bear defined-risk: put spread targeting $170. Neutral: iron condor within a $185 to $205 range.
- Monitor Q4 prints from Dynatrace and New Relic for sector-level confirmation that observability budgets are intact.
- Key Q4 tells: largest customer usage versus minimum commitment, billings growth relative to revenue, and free cash flow margin trajectory.
