United Natural Foods Swings to a $0.62 Profit. Options Say the Real Test Is Guidance.

The question this morning is not whether United Natural Foods can post a profit. The question is whether the food supply chain has already told traders what Friday’s inflation data is going to say.

UNFI opens its fiscal Q4 FY2026 conference call at 8:30 a.m. ET today, reporting for the 13-week period ended August 1, 2026. Consensus sits at $0.62 per share, a significant jump from the loss of $0.11 recorded a year ago. Revenue is expected at $7.68 billion. On the surface, that looks like a clean turnaround. One layer down, the story is more complicated.

UNFI has delivered an average earnings surprise of 29.9% over the trailing four quarters, but the company’s top line continues to face structural headwinds tied to its multi-year network optimization program. The fourth-quarter top line was likely pressured by ongoing conventional product-focused network optimization, with management noting that the larger actions would not be fully lapped until the first quarter of fiscal 2027. That means the beat, if it comes, lives entirely on the cost side.

The Numbers Behind the Swing

The EPS forecast represents a dramatic improvement from the year-ago quarter, when the company posted a loss per share of $0.11 on revenue of $7.7 billion. Revenue is expected to remain broadly unchanged from the prior year period, while the bottom line trajectory tells a completely different story. The mechanism driving that gap is network productivity, not volume growth.

The company has been winding down short-term, project-based work within its Natural segment, a deliberate strategic shift that has reduced revenue but is intended to improve margin quality. Management identified natural-product growth as a specific tailwind for the fourth quarter, supported by continued shopper demand for organic, fresh, and specialty products, though low-single-digit food inflation anticipated through fiscal year-end provided only modest additional revenue support relative to the larger optimization drag.

UNFI’s full-year guidance sits at $2.40 to $2.60 in adjusted EPS, which means this quarter needs to land near $0.62 to keep the full-year range credible. Last quarter, UNFI reported $0.77 per share, coming in below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.81. Guidance credibility is on trial again today.

What the Inflation Backdrop Adds

This is not just a UNFI quarter. It is the first food-supply-chain read of the week, arriving three days before August CPI and 72 hours before Kroger reports its own Q2 results. USDA’s latest food price outlook flagged wholesale beef prices remaining at all-time highs for this time of year, and it forecast 2026 farm-level cattle prices up 9.9% and wholesale beef prices up 9.4%.

UNFI’s management commentary on food cost pass-through this morning will be the first data point traders have before Friday’s CPI release. Kroger is set to report its Q2 results before the market opens on September 11, with the Street’s consensus clustered around $1.05 in adjusted EPS. UNFI’s guidance language sets the tone for how that report gets read.

Options Market: The Flow Already Leans One Direction

The put/call ratio jumped to 1.51 on September 4, the highest reading of the last 52 weeks and more than two standard deviations above its 20-day average of 1.21. That is a defensive lean, not a neutral one. Following last quarter’s earnings, UNFI shares declined 10.3% on the day of the announcement. The two quarters before that also produced negative post-earnings reactions, per Ortex data.

Analyst consensus is broadly neutral-to-positive, with a mean price target near $49 to $50, and the most recent move from UBS in June maintained a Neutral rating with a target lift to $47. UNFI’s most recent regular-session open was $43.74, against a 50-day moving average near $47.7. The stock is already trading below that trend line. Options traders are not positioned for a gap higher.

Historically, stocks stay within their earnings expected move roughly 70 to 75% of the time, slightly better than the theoretical 68% because IV is inflated heading into earnings, so the implied move overstates the actual move more often than not. For a stock sitting in the low $40s with a defensive put/call tilt at 52-week highs, the more relevant risk is that guidance disappoints or management softens the full-year range.

Structured Trade Framework

Bull case: If you believe UNFI beats the $0.62 consensus on expanding margins and holds full-year guidance at the midpoint, a defined-risk structure such as a long call spread in the October expiry captures the rerating toward the $47 to $50 analyst target range while capping downside to the premium paid. Defined risk is the requirement here given the put/call overhang.

Bear case: For traders expecting a repeat of last quarter’s post-earnings slide, a long put or put spread expiring this week isolates the event. The most recent quarter saw the stock down about 10% on the day. A similar outcome would bring $41 to $42 into view.

Neutral case: Given the elevated put/call ratio, a short strangle or iron condor captures IV crush post-announcement if the stock stays rangebound. The structural risk: guidance commentary on beef costs and CPI sensitivity could widen the actual move beyond what the straddle prices.

Risk and Forward Outlook

The report will test whether management’s guidance raise from the prior quarter was the start of a genuine earnings inflection or a one-quarter beat in a structurally pressured food distribution business. The macro calendar compresses that judgment into 72 hours. August CPI on Friday and Kroger on Friday morning follow directly. Any signal from UNFI’s management on food-cost trajectory will be read as a leading indicator for both.

Action Checklist

  • Watch the 8:30 a.m. ET call for commentary on beef cost pass-through and FY2027 guidance range.
  • Compare reported EPS and revenue against $0.62 and $7.68 billion consensus.
  • Track whether full-year adjusted EPS guidance of $2.40 to $2.60 is maintained, narrowed, or lowered.
  • Monitor UNFI stock versus the $43.74 most recent open as the post-announcement anchor level.
  • Flag any management language on food inflation as a forward read into Friday’s August CPI.
  • Reassess Kroger and SFM positioning after UNFI’s supply-chain commentary clears.
