BlackRock Is in Talks to Join OpenAI’s $30B Round

Bloomberg says BlackRock may back OpenAI with Abu Dhabi’s MGX

There is a tension embedded in BlackRock’s position in AI markets that the firm has never had to resolve, and this week it got sharper. Bloomberg reported Monday evening that BlackRock is in talks to participate in OpenAI’s $30 billion private round, sitting alongside a syndicate of UAE funds led by Abu Dhabi’s MGX that have collectively discussed contributing as much as $10 billion.

OpenAI is seeking at least $30 billion at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion, according to people familiar with the discussions cited by Bloomberg, having pushed back plans for an initial public offering until at least 2027. The March fundraise, worth $122 billion at an $852 billion post-money valuation, already made it the largest private AI capital event in history. This round would extend that valuation by more than 60 percent in seven months.

BlackRock and MGX are not strangers. MGX and BlackRock already run an AI infrastructure partnership with Microsoft, with Nvidia and xAI joining the group, and the platform has said it initially aims to unlock $30 billion of equity capital, with the potential to mobilize up to $100 billion including debt financing. MGX has said it closed its first fund at $49 billion in total commitments and has publicly described participating in funding rounds for Anthropic and xAI, alongside prior reporting that it is an investor in OpenAI.

The Position BlackRock Is Building

The question for institutional investors is not whether BlackRock should do private deals. It does them constantly. The question is what it means when the firm managing the public AI trade is also anchoring the private one.

BlackRock continues to view AI as a long-term, capital-intensive investment cycle, with infrastructure spending elevated and productivity gains backed by AI-related investments, and the firm does not see the theme as nearing exhaustion. That conviction is already expressed across its listed products. BlackRock’s iShares A.I. Innovation and Tech Active ETF (BAI) has amassed over $9 billion in net assets.

Now add a meaningful direct stake in OpenAI’s equity round. BlackRock would then hold public exposure to every major listed AI infrastructure company, a potential private stake in a leading frontier model lab, and an AI infrastructure partnership alongside many of the same names. That is a web of positions that did not exist two years ago.

What the Bear Case Looks Like

Portfolio managers tracking AI risk through listed stocks should think carefully about what BlackRock’s position implies for price discovery. Reporting on the talks has said no lead investor has been chosen, and that OpenAI is discussing a price it set rather than letting investors negotiate terms. That is not a standard capital raise. When the largest passive and active manager in the world participates in a round priced by the issuer, it changes how the market should read that signal.

There is also the governance dimension. BlackRock senior managing director Adebayo Ogunlesi joined OpenAI’s board of directors in 2025. If BlackRock funds get a chance to own OpenAI stock, they are likely to take it. The logic is clear. The concentration risk it creates is equally clear.

What Investors Are Missing

The overlooked implication is what BlackRock’s dual role does to the listed AI trade. If the private round closes at $1.4 trillion, it sets a valuation anchor for every public company in the ecosystem. Microsoft holds roughly 27 percent of OpenAI Group, according to OpenAI and a Microsoft filing. At a $1.4 trillion valuation, that stake would imply about $378 billion in value. But for Microsoft shareholders, it remains a component alongside the core Azure and software thesis. Nvidia’s position is different: its chips business is what actually benefits from OpenAI’s continued scaling, regardless of the precise mark.

Stocks to Watch

BlackRock (BLK): The firm at the center of this. A successful close would confirm BLK as the institutional bridge between public and private AI capital. Watch how management addresses the positioning question on its next earnings call.

Microsoft (MSFT): Holds roughly 27 percent of OpenAI Group. A $1.4 trillion close makes that stake worth roughly $378 billion, up from roughly $230 billion at the March round’s post-money valuation.

Nvidia (NVDA): Every dollar OpenAI raises goes, directly or indirectly, toward compute. Reuters has reported that Nvidia and OpenAI said Nvidia intends to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI and supply it with data center chips. A closed round would further accelerate the infrastructure buildout that sustains Nvidia’s forward order book.

The round is not closed. Terms could change. But the signal from BlackRock’s participation, if confirmed, is that the world’s largest asset manager has decided there is no conflict worth managing. Fund managers should decide whether they agree.
