Intel Reports Tonight. Options Price Less Fear Than the Math
Two numbers define Intel’s position heading into tonight’s Q3 report. The stock is up about 154% in 2026. It has also dropped about 24% in the past month as semiconductor valuations compressed across the sector. Those two facts are not in contradiction. They are the tension that makes the results tonight more consequential than a typical beat-or-miss event.
Options are pricing a 9.4% move in either direction, which places the post-earnings range between roughly $84.91 and $102.57 based on Tuesday’s close of $93.74. That implied swing sits below the stock’s 12.2% average post-earnings move over the last four quarters, a range that has included a 23.6% gain and a 17.0% decline on consecutive reports. The market is, in effect, saying this report carries less binary risk than the historical record would suggest. That is a position worth examining before accepting it.
The Numbers on the Table
Wall Street consensus calls for adjusted EPS of $0.40, up from the $0.23 reported in Q3 2025, on revenue of about $16.5 billion. Intel’s own guidance set the bar at $0.38 EPS and $15.8 to $16.8 billion in revenue, with non-GAAP gross margin guided to 42%. In Q2, Intel reported $0.42 EPS against a consensus of $0.21 and revenue of $16.13 billion against an estimate near $14.43 billion. The stock fell in the next session. A beat alone has not been enough.
The beat-without-reward dynamic is not unique to Intel. Semiconductor stocks reporting into a derated sector have faced the same sell-the-news pressure even when results clear the bar.
Wedbush analyst Matt Bryson, who carries a Hold rating and a $98 price target, expects Intel to beat its Q3 guidance on stronger server demand. He also flags that the next move depends less on the Q3 number and more on Q4 guidance, where he models $17.5 billion in revenue and $0.49 in EPS, both above the current consensus of $16.9 billion and $0.43. That forward gap is where the real optionality sits.
Microsoft’s results carry direct read-through for Intel’s foundry ambitions. Azure capital spending guidance will signal whether hyperscaler demand for advanced-node chips remains on the trajectory Intel’s 18A pipeline depends on.
The Foundry Test Is Tonight
Beyond the income statement, this report is a referendum on whether Intel Foundry has moved from aspiration to revenue. Panther Lake is Intel’s first client platform built on Intel 18A, and Intel has said Panther Lake ramped to high-volume production in 2025 with broad availability beginning in January 2026. Intel has also said it signed deals with Microsoft and Amazon to produce chips on 18A, but public details have been limited. The fundamental question remains unanswered: how much of Intel’s foundry revenue still comes exclusively from its own products? RBC Capital analyst Srini Pajjuri, who holds a $100 price target, expects AI-related demand to support another earnings beat and sees server CPU volume growth staying strong. But analyst consensus sits near a Buy, with an average target around $118. The valuation, at roughly 85 times forward earnings on some models, leaves the margin of error thin.
Options Market Structure
IV rank heading into the event sits near the mid-range of INTC’s 52-week implied volatility band, which has spanned roughly the mid-40s to above 100%. Current 30-day IV near the mid-60s sits below the 30-day realized volatility, which has recently run much higher, placing the IV/HV ratio below 1.0. That relationship means options are, on a relative basis, underpriced compared to how much the stock has actually moved. The put-to-call ratio on the November 6 expiration stands near 0.67, signaling net bullish positioning in the derivatives market ahead of the report.
Structured Trade Framework
Bull case: For traders expecting a beat and credible Q4 guidance, a defined-risk long call spread targeting the $100 to $105 strike range in the November expiration captures the implied upside while limiting loss to premium paid. The 9.4% move expectation maps to roughly $102.57 on the high end.
Bear case: If you believe guidance disappoints on margins or foundry external commitments fail to materialize, a defined-risk put spread in the $88 to $84 range captures a move toward the lower bound of the implied range. The 17% decline seen after a prior report remains the historical floor reference.
Neutral case: With IV rank in mid-range and realized vol running well above implied, a short iron condor straddling the $85 to $103 range collects elevated premium across both wings while defining maximum loss. This structure profits if the stock stays inside the options-implied move, which the market has only matched or exceeded in two of the last four quarters.
The sector context sharpens the risk on both sides of this trade. Lam Research’s record quarter produced a 6% after-hours drop, illustrating how elevated semiconductor valuations punish even clean beats when the surprise margin thins.
Risk Factors
The primary risk is guidance. A Q3 beat without a compelling Q4 outlook has already produced a sell-the-news reaction, as Q2 demonstrated. Secondary risk is margin trajectory: gross margin guidance of 42% leaves little cushion if foundry costs accelerate. On the upside, any named external foundry commitment, particularly from Apple, which has been reported as a company in the orbit of advanced-node discussions across the industry, would represent a structural catalyst the current price does not fully reflect.
Action Checklist
- Watch adjusted EPS vs. $0.40 consensus and gross margin vs. 42% guidance.
- Q4 revenue guidance relative to the $16.9 billion consensus carries more weight than Q3 results.
- Monitor any language on named external foundry customers on Intel 18A and Intel 18A-P.
- Note the put-to-call ratio at 0.67 heading in: bullish options positioning can amplify a downside move if the catalyst fails.
- The implied range of $84.91 to $102.57 is the market’s defined risk corridor. Positions outside that range require a view that this report breaks from recent pattern.
