Four AI Giants Report in 48 Hours. Options Are Expensive.

Markets do not need an earnings season to form a view on AI spending. They only need a catalyst to change one. That catalyst arrives Wednesday evening, October 28, when Microsoft and Alphabet both report after the close, followed by Amazon and Intel Thursday. Four names, two nights, one Fed decision sandwiched between them, and a Nasdaq that has shed roughly 4.5% over the prior two weeks. The selling was not random. The AI trade has been pressured by a mix of competitive fears and rate sensitivity, with investors increasingly focused on how much capital these companies are committing to AI infrastructure.
That context changes how these reports land. The question is no longer whether the hyperscalers are growing. They are. The question is whether the market will pay for it at current rates.
The Numbers in Front of Us
Microsoft (MSFT, Wed. Oct. 28 AMC): Analysts expect about $4.71 to $4.72 per share on roughly $90.6 to $90.7 billion in revenue, versus $4.13 on $77.67 billion a year earlier. The single most-watched line is Azure. Management has guided to Azure and other cloud services revenue growth of approximately 45% in constant currency in Q1 FY2027, after 43% in Q4 FY2026. MSFT has beaten consensus EPS in most recent quarters. The last quarter delivered an 11.79% EPS surprise, and the stock reacted with a 14.68% gain. The bar is higher now.
Alphabet (GOOGL, Wed. Oct. 28 AMC): Consensus EPS sits around the high-$2 range, but estimates vary by source and update cadence. Last quarter, the stock moved -7.9% against a ±5.9% implied move options had priced in. Google Cloud’s Q2 revenue rose 82% year over year, but the 36% operating margin claim is not supported by the company’s reported segment disclosures. A repeat of that cloud acceleration is the bull case; anything less is the risk.
Amazon (AMZN, Thu. Oct. 29 AMC): Consensus is $1.96 per share on about $202.2 billion in revenue. AWS is the swing factor. Investors will be tracking AWS after revenue grew 37% to $42.2 billion in Q2, its fastest pace in 18 quarters. Analysts will be watching for whether that pace holds and what Amazon says about capacity and AI demand.
Intel (INTC, Thu. Oct. 29 AMC): Intel is expected to post about $0.39 to $0.40 per share on roughly $16.4 to $16.5 billion in revenue. Expected EPS growth around the high-60% to low-70% range year over year reflects a company still in recovery. Intel has beaten estimates in recent quarters, but its stock remains well below recent highs.
Options Market Conditions
Implied volatility is elevated across the group heading into the reports, but the specific IV30 and IV rank figures in the draft depend on the vendor, timestamp, and methodology and could not be verified as stated. The options market is broadly pricing mid-single-digit earnings-week moves for MSFT, GOOGL, and AMZN. GOOGL has cleared its implied move in a meaningful share of recent reports, which can support the case for long-premium positioning into the print, but that edge is not stable enough to treat as a fixed percentage without a timestamped source.
Structured Trade Framework
Bull case (MSFT/AMZN): Azure at or above 45% and AWS sustaining Q2-like growth justify current multiples. A defined-risk long call spread, expiring the week of October 31, captures a directional move while capping premium at risk into IV crush.
Bear case (GOOGL): If Cloud growth decelerates meaningfully and management signals capex acceleration without near-term margin expansion, the July move (-7.9%) becomes the template. A put spread two strikes out-of-the-money defines the downside.
Neutral case: For traders expecting dispersion between these four names to widen regardless of direction, an iron condor on MSFT sells the implied move against a narrower expected range.
Risk Factors
Futures-implied odds have been pointing to a hold as the base case for the Fed’s October 28 decision, but the exact probability fluctuates daily. The decision falls between the MSFT/GOOGL report and the AMZN/INTC report. Any hawkish signal resets the discount rate for every duration-sensitive growth stock in the group simultaneously. FactSet data shows S&P 500 blended Q3 earnings growth running at 29.5%, but the aggregate EPS surprise is only about 2.1%, well below the five-year average of 7.5%. Beats are coming in smaller. That matters when IV is priced for large moves.
Action Checklist
- Confirm whether Azure growth lands at, above, or below the 45% constant-currency guide before sizing any MSFT position.
- Watch GOOGL’s Google Cloud profitability trend closely, but do not anchor to a 36% operating margin figure that is not supported by the company’s reported segment results.
- For AMZN, compare operating income to the company’s latest guided range in the earnings release, not a stale range, before reacting to the EPS headline, which can include mark-to-market effects.
- Note that the Fed decision on October 28 falls before AMZN and INTC report. Adjust position size accordingly if the decision surprises.
- IV crush post-report will deflate long premium sharply. Defined-risk spreads can dominate outright long options for this cluster.
