Bonus Content: Marathon Petroleum Reports Q3 as Margins Shift Fast

A note from our friends at Decentralized Masters(ad)

Dear Reader,

BlackRock… the firm managing $14 trillion in assets, more than the GDP of every country on Earth except the U.S. and China…

Just moved $100 billion into a single asset class.

Their Bitcoin ETF crossed $100 billion in less than a year.

It’s now BlackRock’s number one revenue source.

Read that again.

The largest asset manager in the history of finance… the firm that essentially manages the world’s money… just made digital assets their top-performing product.

“Okay but maybe it’s just a hedge… maybe they’re just experimenting?”

No.

Larry Fink, BlackRock’s CEO, publicly stated:

“The next generation for markets will be tokenization of securities.”

Not some securities.

ALL of them.

Every stock…

Every bond…

Every fund…

Moving digitally onto crypto rails.

He and his COO wrote in The Economist that tokenization could do for finance what the early internet did for information.

And they’re projecting a 33x in digital asset market growth between now and 2030.

But here’s the question nobody’s asking…

WHY?

Why would the most powerful financial institution on Earth go all in on digital assets right now?

Because BlackRock sees the same math that you and I can see.

$39 trillion in debt.

The dollar’s worst collapse in 50 years.

The only way out? Explosive GDP growth driven by AI.

And AI at scale… billions of autonomous machines transacting every second… can’t run on Visa.

It can’t run on ACH.

It can’t run on a banking system that closes at 5 PM.

AI needs a new financial infrastructure… and that infrastructure is digital assets.

BlackRock sees it.

JPMorgan sees it (they’re already processing $1 billion per day through digital asset infrastructure).

Citigroup and Visa are building their own.

Roughly 170 public companies have already moved their treasuries into Bitcoin.

The smartest money on the planet is moving in one direction.

The question is whether you move with them… or you’re still holding dollars when the biggest wealth migration in history plays out without you.

I just recorded a free briefing that breaks down exactly what’s happening, why BlackRock is doing this, and how everyday investors are positioning themselves right now.

It walks you through:

  • The exact thesis connecting America’s debt crisis to AI to digital assets (and why it’s inevitable)… potentially large profit opportunity here
  • Why AI stocks are NOT where the real money gets made (the math doesn’t work from here)
  • The three-phase investment system our members are using to earn yield, catch early-stage gems, and build wealth regardless of market direction

This briefing is free, and it could change how you see the next 4 years of your financial life.

Marathon Petroleum Reports Q3 as Margins Shift Fast

Marathon Petroleum reports Q3 2026 results before the open today, with the earnings call at 11am ET. The headline consensus is approximately $25.37 per share against $3.01 in the year-ago quarter, a 743% year-over-year surge built almost entirely on refining margins that were historically extraordinary for most of the summer. The problem: those margins are already partially unwound. Oil posted its sharpest drop in three months on Monday, with Brent falling 7.6% to settle at $104.77 per barrel and U.S. crude dropping about 7.3% to settle at $96.46, Reuters reported Monday. MPC is reporting a quarter it earned in one pricing environment into a market that reset overnight.

This is not about whether Marathon beats consensus. It is about what forward guidance says in a world where the cost input just moved violently in the company’s favor on margins, but violently against the war-premium embedded in prior crude prices.

The Numbers

The Q3 2026 EPS consensus stands at $25.37, compared with $3.01 in the year-ago quarter, representing 742.9% growth. Revenue consensus for Q3 is approximately $46.60 billion, versus $34.81 billion a year ago. For context, MPC last reported on August 4, 2026, posting $17.73 per share and beating the $14.27 consensus estimate. That Q2 print was itself a significant beat. On the company’s own release, second-quarter net income attributable to MPC was $5.1 billion, or $17.73 per diluted share.

The crude price environment that built those Q3 numbers was itself a product of escalating geopolitical risk. Brent reaching $116 on war-premium pricing set the ceiling that refining margins were extrapolated from — and understanding that ceiling matters for reading how far the consensus bar was stretched.

The Q3 EPS consensus was only $16.08 just 90 days ago, with analysts making 10 upward revisions in the prior 30 days. That revision velocity means the bar is now set on an aggressive extrapolation of peak refining conditions. The consensus for refining and marketing margin is $44.76, compared with $17.60 in the same quarter a year ago.

Why the Reaction Could Disappoint Even on a Beat

MPC shares surged 171% year to date, yet the stock dropped about 3% after Q2’s blowout beat, showing elevated expectations leave no margin for error. That pattern matters today. A company can print $26 and still sell off if crude diplomacy has already changed the refiner’s earnings trajectory for Q4 and 2027.

Three friction points deserve attention. Management guided to approximately $290 million in planned turnaround costs focused on Gulf Coast and MidCon conversion units, with executives noting that work limits product upgrading and creates a headwind to capture. Q3 guidance also called for refining operating costs of $5.60 per barrel, distribution costs of $1,650 million, and corporate costs of $260 million. Any slippage on those figures amplifies the miss math at a $25+ EPS consensus.

The refining margin story is not unique to Marathon. ExxonMobil’s Q3 showed how a $4.5 billion refining contribution can still leave a stock exposed when the bar is set this high.

Options Market: The Setup Into 11am

The options market has sent two different signals depending on where you look. Based on widely tracked at-the-money straddle pricing into the November 20 expiry, MPC options have been implying a roughly high-single-digit to low-double-digit move into earnings. Unusual Whales, for example, put the implied move at roughly plus or minus 9.6%, or about $42 on the stock. The divergence across trackers reflects genuine uncertainty about whether this quarter gets treated like a refining earnings event or like a macro crude-price reset event. Both are live this morning.

MPC’s 30-day implied volatility as of late October stood around the mid-50% range, depending on the snapshot and data vendor. Marathon has beaten the consensus EPS estimate in eight straight quarters, which helps explain why implied volatility has stayed elevated into the call.

Structured Trade Framework

Bull case. If you believe MPC prints above $26 and guides Q4 refining margins above current sell-side models, a defined-risk debit call spread in the November weekly expiry captures upside while containing exposure to an IV crush after the 11am call. Target the $455/$475 strike range, sizing to risk no more than 1-2% of account on premium paid.

Bear case. For traders expecting guidance to reflect crude normalization, a put debit spread structures risk below current levels. The $415/$395 strike range offers defined exposure to a repeat of the Q2 post-beat selloff pattern. The stock fell about 3% after Q2 despite a large earnings beat, which is the behavioral template here.

Neutral case. Given the wide implied move spread between sources, a short iron condor placed well outside the consensus range collects premium from IV compression after the call resolves. Define risk carefully: if Brent diplomacy reverses on any headline before settlement, realized move could easily exceed the lower implied estimate.

The crude volatility driving that condor risk has a structural source. The OVX near 67 signals that options markets are still pricing Strait of Hormuz disruption through crude volatility rather than equity front-end premium.

Risk and Forward Outlook

Brent crude fell about 7.6% to settle at $104.77 on November 2, as hopes for progress on diplomacy with Iran drove a sharp unwind in crude risk premium, Reuters reported Monday. The situation remains fluid: the price drop is built on the expectation of a deal path, not a finalized agreement. A reversal sends crude sharply higher, which is mixed for refiners: tighter input costs hurt, but product price follow-through can protect margin.

MPLX, Marathon’s midstream affiliate, provides a margin floor the pure-play refiners like Valero and Phillips 66 do not have. In MPC’s April 2026 investor materials, the company pointed to Natural Gas and NGL growth at MPLX and framed that strategic relationship as supporting distribution growth and capital return. That is the structural argument for MPC holding a premium valuation versus peers even if crack spreads normalize.

Checklist

  • Consensus EPS: $25.37 vs. $3.01 year-ago; revenue consensus approximately $46.60B
  • Expected move: options trackers vary, with Unusual Whales around 9.6% (about $42)
  • IV elevated in the mid-50% range for 30-day measures; watch for crush after 11am call
  • Key variable: Q4 refining margin guidance in context of Monday’s Brent collapse
  • Bull structure: Nov weekly $455/$475 call spread, defined premium risk
  • Bear structure: Nov weekly $415/$395 put spread, keyed to post-beat selloff pattern
  • Neutral structure: short iron condor outside implied range, closed before crude headline risk returns
  • Monitor MPLX midstream commentary for durable earnings floor signal
