ExxonMobil Earned $15 Billion in Q3. Refining Built It.

A $4.5 billion refining lift drove the quarter, but margins are the number to question.

ExxonMobil released its third-quarter results this morning. The headline is large: roughly $15.1 billion of adjusted earnings, up from $14.7 billion in Q2, driven primarily by about a $4.5 billion contribution from stronger refining margins. That is the number the rest of the report has to be read against.

Why This Stock Now

Energy has been October’s standout sector. Between October 20 and October 23, the Energy Select Sector ETF gained about 2.0%, while the S&P 500 fell about 1.15% over the same period. Money leaving chips moved into energy and consumer staples, which both notched strong gains in October through October 22. ExxonMobil is up roughly 13% over the past month and enters earnings with an average analyst price target of $179.41 against a recent share price around $183. That gap matters when the earnings bar is this high.

The Business

ExxonMobil operates across upstream oil and gas production, refining, chemicals, and specialty products. In its 2030 plan, the company has said it expects to double Permian production by 2030 versus 2024, to about 2.5 million oil-equivalent barrels per day. The fifth Guyana project (Uaru) is slated to add roughly 250,000 barrels per day of capacity after a targeted 2026 startup. Cumulative structural cost savings stand at $16.3 billion, which the company has said is more than all other international oil companies combined.

Why Wall Street Is Paying Attention

ExxonMobil estimated a $4.4 billion impact from margin changes, a $1.3 billion decrease from liquids prices, and a $0.3 billion increase from gas prices as selected Q3 factors versus Q2. Brent crude remained elevated, trading above $104 a barrel in early October. The year-over-year comparison points to dramatic profit improvement, with Q3 2025 earnings excluding identified items at $1.88 per share and total revenues and other income of $85.3 billion.

What Is Driving the Opportunity

Three things separate ExxonMobil from peers in the current environment. Permian output compounds at a rate few competitors have matched, and Exxon’s own plan calls for roughly doubling Permian production by 2030 versus 2024. The Guyana deepwater project adds barrels at among the lowest cost structures in the industry. And the structural savings program provides a buffer when oil prices pull back. Q2 cash flow from operating activities was $23.6 billion and free cash flow was $17.2 billion. If Q3 delivers anything close to that, the capital return program remains well funded well into next year.

What Could Go Wrong

Refining margins are the variable that makes Q3 exceptional and the one to not assume persists. ExxonMobil’s fuel-making operations generated about $4.2 billion in Q2, but that can swing quickly with spreads, utilization, and maintenance. Lower oil prices reduced earnings by $1.3 billion, and timing effects were an estimated $2.6 billion tailwind in Q2. If Brent retraces toward $90, the margin lift shrinks considerably. ExxonMobil’s trailing EV/EBITDA of 10.26 times sits at a premium to the industry average of 6.68 times, which limits how much earnings strength can translate into further multiple expansion.

The Bottom Line

ExxonMobil is the best-positioned integrated oil company for a high-price, wide-margin refining environment. The Q3 results confirm that thesis. The harder question is whether elevated Brent and wide refining spreads define the next two years or just this one strong quarter. Management’s comments on Guyana’s 2026 startup timing and forward refining margin assumptions on today’s 8:30 a.m. CT call will determine whether the stock’s premium to peers is still warranted here.
