Neuralink Has 21 Patients. The Race to Own the Brain Is Just Starting.

Sovereign wealth funds, Sequoia, and competing approaches tell investors this is no longer a science project.

Neuralink is not a speculative moonshot anymore. It is a clinical-stage medical device company with patients, FDA designations, and a sovereign wealth fund on its cap table. Investors who treat it as a curiosity are misreading the moment.

More than a handful of people with severe paralysis are now using Neuralink’s implant to control digital and physical devices, and the company holds two FDA Breakthrough Device Designations. That is not science fiction. That is a regulatory and manufacturing roadmap.

The capital following it reflects that shift. Neuralink closed a $650 million Series E on June 2, 2025, bringing its total primary funding to roughly $1.85 billion since its founding in 2016. Then, in May 2026, the Oman Investment Authority announced it had invested in Neuralink, framing the commitment as backing for brain-computer interface technology. Sovereign capital moving into pre-commercial neurotechnology is a signal worth noting.

The secondary market has been equally telling. Secondary market activity as of early 2026 suggests implied valuations approaching $40 billion, though that figure remains unconfirmed and should be treated as indicative.

The Competition Is Real, and That Is Bullish

Neuralink grabs headlines, but three competitors are building genuinely different technical arguments for why brain-computer interfaces become a large market.

Synchron takes the least invasive route. While Neuralink places an implant through the skull, Synchron slips its Stentrode through the jugular vein in an endovascular procedure, avoiding open brain surgery. Synchron has advanced its FDA work through early feasibility-stage clinical efforts for chronically implanted communication BCIs, with ongoing trials in the U.S. and Australia. Its backers include Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates.

Precision Neuroscience, meanwhile, already has regulatory clearance that Neuralink does not. The FDA clearance of its Layer 7 Cortical Interface marks the first full regulatory clearance granted to a company developing a next-generation wireless BCI. With that clearance, Precision can place its implant for up to 30 days, allowing it to market the technology for clinical applications such as intraoperative brain mapping and to build a repository of high-resolution neural data it can use to train BCI algorithms. The company recently closed a $250 million raise, ranking near the 98th percentile by size among U.S. late-stage health deals, according to Dealroom.

Paradromics, based in Austin, received an FDA Investigational Device Exemption in November 2025 for its Connexus interface through the Connect-One early feasibility study. The company has positioned 2026 as the start of its first human study, targeting speech restoration with a bandwidth it argues can exceed current implants.

Why This Matters Now

The BCI market does not need to reach its most ambitious projections to justify attention. Market size estimates vary widely by definition, but multiple research firms project rapid growth into 2030.

Neuralink remains private, so direct exposure is limited to secondary markets and pre-IPO vehicles. Commentators have floated Neuralink as a potential future IPO candidate in Musk’s portfolio, contingent on clinical progress and commercial readiness. The more accessible play today is the competitive field: Synchron, Precision Neuroscience, and Blackrock Neurotech are all attracting institutional capital and advancing regulatory timelines. The investors worth watching are not those chasing Neuralink specifically. They are the ones mapping the full surgical and non-surgical BCI landscape before the first commercial approval changes the risk calculus for everyone.
