Robinhood Reports Tuesday With Bitcoin Down 36% From Its Peak
The number that matters most heading into Robinhood’s Q3 report is not the one on the EPS line. It is the one on bitcoin’s chart.
Bitcoin trades roughly 36% below its all-time high of $126,198. That gap defines Robinhood’s quarter. A year ago, a 300% surge in crypto revenue doubled total revenue to $1.27 billion and powered $0.61 in EPS. Surpassing last year’s $268 million crypto revenue figure seems unlikely while bitcoin remains more than 21% below its value from a year ago. The question for Tuesday night is not whether crypto disappointed. It is whether everything else grew fast enough to absorb the drag.
Robinhood is expected to post earnings of $0.56 per share on revenue of about $1.4 billion. That implies EPS growth of roughly negative 8% against the prior year, while revenue is forecast to grow about 11%. Revenue growing while earnings fall is a compression story, and it points directly at the revenue mix.
The Revenue Mix Inversion
Twelve months ago, crypto was the engine. In Q3 2025, crypto revenue came in at $268 million, up over 300% year on year, while options revenue was $304 million, up 50%, and equities added $86 million, up 132%. By Q2 2026, the inversion was complete. Crypto transaction revenue fell from $358 million, 53% of transaction-based revenue in Q4 2024, to just $100 million in Q2 2026. Options revenue rose 29% to $342 million, equities surged 95% to $129 million, and event-contract revenue grew more than tenfold to $156 million.
That structural shift is the crux of Tuesday’s report. Options volume has compounded through every quarter of declining crypto. Options contracts traded increased 50% year over year to a record 774 million in Q2 2026. If that trajectory held through September, options may prove sufficient ballast against what the bitcoin chart implies about crypto revenue. Robinhood enters Tuesday’s report with expanding revenue sources and stronger customer engagement, though analysts expect higher revenue alongside lower year-over-year EPS, and crypto revenue remains a key weakness.
Options Market Analysis
The options market has its own read on the binary. With shares around $95.05, the October 30 expiration implies a 10.26% move, or $9.75, in either direction, derived from a $5.10 call and $4.65 put at the nearest strike. That is modestly elevated: over the last eight quarters, Robinhood’s average absolute one-day post-earnings move was 9.42%, making the current implied move about 0.84 percentage points above historical experience.
Reactions have ranged from 2.87% to 16.73%, with April 2026 producing a 13.24% decline, July a mild 3.61% drop, and earlier outliers including a 14.11% rally in February 2025 and a 16.73% decline in October 2024. The put/call ratio edged to 0.55 from a typical 0.51, while implied volatility climbed to 68.01 on October 22, a moderately bearish positioning ahead of earnings.
The gap between implied and realized moves is a recurring earnings-volatility pattern across the market. The options market priced a 9.6% swing in NFLX but the realized drop landed near 6%, rewarding premium sellers who respected the implied range.
Structured Trade Framework
This is not a directional call. It is a framework for defined-risk positioning around a confirmed catalyst with an outsized move history.
Bull case: If you believe options volume sustained its record pace through Q3 and event contracts added a second growth engine, a defined-risk call spread targeting the $104–$105 zone captures the upper bound without unlimited exposure to a crypto miss. Probability of reaching that level requires a beat on both revenue and EPS against a consensus that is already set below the year-ago figure.
Bear case: For traders expecting crypto revenue to undershoot consensus and compress guidance, a put spread in the $85–$88 range offers defined-risk exposure to the downside tail. The October 2024 reaction of 16.73% is a data point, not a base case. A 10% decline would push shares below $86.
Neutral case: Given that the implied move of 10.26% sits above the 9.42% historical average, an iron condor selling the wings captures premium if the realized move lands inside that band, as it did in July, when the stock fell just 3.61% against a 9.6% implied move. HOOD’s actual move has topped implied volatility in roughly 59% of recent tracked reports, which argues for respecting the tails rather than fading them entirely.
Risk Analysis and Forward Outlook
Three forces will determine the reaction. First, crypto revenue: spot bitcoin ETF outflows surged to $635.5 million on October 22, the highest since June, and October flipped to a net outflow of about $174.5 million for the month after that session. Retail crypto volumes closely track ETF sentiment, and a weak September number would confirm three consecutive quarters of decline. Second, options volume: any sequential acceleration from the 774 million contracts in Q2 is a bullish signal the market may not have fully priced. Third, guidance: analysts expect about $2.15 EPS for the full fiscal year 2026 and about $2.97 for 2027, and any cut to that full-year path would hit sentiment harder than the Q3 number itself.
Coinbase carries its own legislative overhang into the same retail crypto environment. A specific Senate vote on digital asset market structure could reset Coinbase’s regulatory risk and crypto trading volumes in a single session.
The market is paying 10% to find out whether options can permanently replace crypto as Robinhood’s transaction engine. Tuesday night provides the first clean answer.
Action Checklist
- Watch options revenue versus the Q2 baseline of $342 million, sequential growth confirms the structural shift
- Crypto revenue consensus implied around $120–$140 million; a miss below $100 million repeats Q2’s drag
- Monitor event contracts, which contributed $156 million in Q2; any acceleration adds to the bull case
- The implied move sets upper and lower bounds at approximately $104.80 and $85.30; define risk before 4 p.m. Tuesday
- Full-year EPS guidance relative to the $2.15 consensus is the number to watch after the headline figures
- Peers COIN, SOFI, and SCHW all carry read-through exposure to Tuesday’s retail engagement data
