Bonus Content: Target Reports in 12 Days. The Valuation Gap vs. Walmart Is Stark.

A note from our friends at Brownstone Research(ad)

Editor’s Note: Jeff Brown is the former tech executive who picked Nvidia in 2016 before it jumped 37,000% higher. He’s now recommending another AI stock that’s the same size Nvidia was 10 years ago. He calls it “Elon Musk’s One Stock Retirement Plan” because he believes Elon Musk is about to create massive demand for this company’s patented technology. Click here to see the details or read more below.

Dear Reader,

Sometimes you come across an opportunity so explosive…

That it has the potential to turn a small stake…

Into a six figure and in some rare cases even a seven-figure nest egg…

Like it happened when I picked Nvidia in 2016.

It jumped high enough to turn $5,000 into an entire retirement nest egg of $1,895,000.

And while I can’t guarantee you’ll become a millionaire…

I think this little-known AI stock is one of those opportunities…

Which is why I call it “Elon Musk’s One Stock Retirement Plan.”

Now, if this idea of retiring with a single stock sounds crazy to you…

You should know that some of the best investors in the world believe that the idea of diversification is a little overrated.

Stanley Druckenmiller said…

“You don’t get rich by diversifying into 50 mediocre assets. You get rich by finding two or three asymmetric home runs.”

I believe this stock is an asymmetric home run.

Or listen to legendary investor Peter Lynch. He said…

“I would own one stock if I can find one great stock.”

Even Warren Buffett said…

“Diversification is protection against ignorance. It makes little sense if you know what you are doing.”

Click here now and I’ll show you why I believe this stock might be the only one you need to retire.

Jeff Brown,
Founder & CEO, Brownstone Research

P.S. If I could buy only one stock, this would be it… it might just be the perfect tech stock.

It’s a leader in an AI breakthrough that’s protected by 150 patents…

It’s a small company, unknown to most people… still in the initial phase of exponential growth…

Plus, it has a near term catalyst that could send shares skyrocketing… starting November 11.

Target Reports in 12 Days. The Valuation Gap vs. Walmart Is Stark.

Target closed Wednesday at $157.95, off 3.2% on the session, against a 52-week range of $83.44 to $170.75. That range tells most of the story by itself: TGT has nearly doubled from its trough, yet it still sits at a multiple that implies the market does not fully trust the recovery. Twelve days before Q3 results, that distrust is worth pricing carefully.

The Numbers Heading In

Consensus for the October quarter stands at $2.05 EPS on $26.45 billion in revenue, according to analyst estimates compiled by Yahoo Finance. Year-ago EPS was $1.78, implying roughly 15% growth if the consensus holds. Revenue growth is estimated at 4.65% year over year. The full-year range analysts are working with runs from $8.79 to $10.78, with the average at $10.24. That is a wide band, and the width reflects genuine uncertainty about how holiday discretionary spending lands against a consumer that remains selective.

Wide analyst estimate bands are a recurring feature of discretionary retail this cycle, and the cost of mispricing them has been severe. Options markets priced a 9% move for Lululemon after earnings and the stock fell roughly 18%, collapsing implied volatility at prices the market never modeled.

What the last two quarters showed: Q1 Adjusted EPS came in at $1.71, 25 cents ahead of estimates, with comparable sales up 5.6%. Q2 GAAP and Adjusted EPS was $4.11 against a consensus of $2.35, and that result included tariff refund benefits of $1.65. Strip the refund and the underlying beat was real but smaller. Digital comparable sales jumped 8.7% in Q2, with same-day delivery growing more than 25%. These are not the numbers of a company in structural decline.

The Multiple That Does Not Fit the Peers

TGT trades at a forward P/E of roughly 14x to 14.7x, depending on which estimate anchor you use. Costco sits at about 43x. Walmart is near 40x. This gap is not new, but it has widened as WMT and COST re-rated on membership model premiums and AI-integrated logistics. Target runs neither a membership model nor a comparable digital moat, which explains part of the discount. What it does run is a multi-decade streak of annual dividend increases, a $4.64 annualized dividend, and operating cash flow that covered the dividend without balance sheet strain in the first half of 2026.

The valuation argument is not that TGT deserves to trade at 40x. It is that 14x for a company with mid-single-digit revenue growth, recovering margins, and a multi-decade dividend streak is a price set by pessimism, not by fundamentals.

Options Market: IV Near the Floor

With the report 12 days out, options are barely pricing event risk. Current 30-day IV runs near 30%, and the IV rank sits at approximately 4% to 6% of its 52-week range. The IV high for the past year hit 53.26% on November 6, 2025, exactly one year ago, when TGT was pricing the prior holiday report. Today’s vol is roughly half that level. The put/call ratio on open interest is near parity at 1.02, suggesting neither strong directional conviction from flow. The options crowd is not positioned aggressively in either direction into November 18.

Structured Trade Framework

Bull case: If you believe Q3 comps sustain the Q1 and Q2 momentum and holiday guidance comes in at or above consensus, a defined-risk long call spread in the November 21 or December expiry captures upside without full premium exposure at current low IV. A $160/$170 call spread costs relatively little given compressed premiums.

Bear case: For traders expecting guidance to disappoint on discretionary categories squeezed by competition from Walmart and off-price rivals, a put spread below the $150 level defines risk while expressing the view that the valuation discount is deserved, not exploitable.

Neutral case: With IV rank at single digits and the stock 7% below its 52-week high, a short strangle or iron condor into the November 21 expiry captures premium from both sides if TGT’s historical tendency to undershoot its implied move persists. In three of the last three reports, TGT moved less than the market priced.

The Core Risk

The clearest risk is not valuation. It is category mix. Target’s discretionary exposure in apparel, home goods, and electronics leaves it vulnerable when consumers trade down or defer. Walmart’s grocery penetration insulates it from that rotation. Target is still building its food business. Until that buffer is larger, any softness in discretionary spending hits TGT margins faster than it hits WMT.

Checklist

  • Q3 report: November 18, 2026, before the open. Consensus: $2.05 EPS, $26.45B revenue.
  • Watch comparable sales against the Q2 comp of 3.8%; below 2% would pressure guidance.
  • IV rank near 5%: options are historically cheap relative to the past year. Long premium structures are more attractive now than near the event.
  • Forward P/E at 14x vs. Costco at about 43x: the gap is real. So is the reason for it.
  • Dividend ex-date: November 10, 2026. The $1.16 quarterly payment is cash in hand regardless of the report.
  • Key risk: discretionary category softness in October data. Monitor same-store sales guidance language closely.
