Bonus Content: AutoZone Q4 Results Land Against a Near-10% Options Bet

A note from our friends at Base Camp Trading(ad)

Hey,

I’m going to do something that may seem a little out of the “norm” these days…

I’m going to give you my #1 trade setup. For free.

It’s the same one I used to find winners like:

  • 113% on GOOGL in under 2 hours.
  • 240% on META in a single session.

I call it the “Opening Bell Breakout.”

It’s one simple setup I look for every morning. When it shows up…

I simply take the trade. And by 10 AM, I’m done.

I’ve put all the details on how it works in a simple, no-fluff guide.

No credit card required. No strings attached.

This guide shows you the exact 15-minute window I trade, and how to spot the same setups the big funds are watching.

It’s yours for free.

AutoZone Q4 Results Land Against a Near-10% Options Bet

AutoZone released fiscal fourth-quarter results this morning, covering the 16 weeks ended August 29, 2026. The numbers land into one of the most charged pre-earnings options setups the stock has seen in years: implied volatility was elevated enough to price a straddle-implied move of roughly 9.7%.

Markets don’t need perfection from AutoZone. They need a same-store sales figure that doesn’t confirm the UBS thesis from September 15: that domestic comps would come in around 2.5%, well short of the Street’s 3.6% consensus. Going in, three of the last four earnings days ended lower for AZO, with declines of 8.99% after May, 6.32% after March, and 7.17% after December 2025. Options traders knew the pattern. They priced it accordingly.

The Numbers on the Table

Consensus entering today called for EPS of roughly $54.08 to $54.22, depending on the source, representing an 11% to 11.3% increase from the $48.71 reported in Q4 fiscal 2025. Revenue consensus sat at $6.70 to $6.71 billion, up 7.5% year over year. The company’s Q3 commentary flagged a projected $30 million non-cash LIFO charge in Q4 that management said would reduce gross margin by roughly 45 basis points and shave about $1.40 from EPS.

The inventory accounting headwind was known and largely baked in. The debate was on comp sales. UBS analysts Michael Lasser and Mark Carden argued that aftermarket demand softened during the quarter, with sales likely bottoming in June before a modest acceleration through July and August. Their estimate for domestic comps was 110 basis points below Street consensus. That is the number the market was trading around this morning.

Strategic Interpretation

This is not a story about whether AutoZone can grow earnings. It is a story about whether the DIY consumer showed up in the back half of summer. Commercial sales have been the cleaner segment: in Q3 fiscal 2026, domestic commercial sales were up 10.4% year over year to $1.4 billion, while domestic DIY sales grew 2.2%. Analysts broadly expected that split to persist in Q4, with any comp upside coming from commercial, not retail foot traffic.

Oppenheimer cut its price target to $3,500 from $4,300 and removed AZO from its top picks list, citing higher oil prices as an additional drag on an already challenged macro backdrop. Evercore ISI also trimmed to $3,500. The stock entered today’s session down nearly 16% year-to-date, trading near $2,855, roughly 26% below the consensus price target of about $3,887. That valuation gap is either a recovery opportunity or a value trap depending entirely on where comps settle in fiscal 2027.

Options Market Analysis

The at-the-money straddle on the nearest post-earnings expiration priced a move of approximately 9.7% in either direction. For a stock trading near $2,855, that implies a range of roughly $2,578 to $3,133 on the day. Over the past decade, AutoZone’s average peak earnings-day move has been about 5.6%, which is why the implied move carried an obvious premium to typical realized behavior. IV rank was elevated heading into the release, consistent with the stock’s pattern of wide post-earnings swings and a year characterized by repeated downside surprises on comp sales.

Put/call flow leaned toward protection over the past week, reflecting the bearish price action and the UBS warning. Premium sellers had a structural argument: three of the last four post-earnings moves were meaningful but did not reach the implied move threshold, suggesting a history of volatility being priced rich. That said, the May 2026 drop of 8.99% came very close to consuming the full straddle premium.

Structured Trade Framework

Bull case: If you believe Q4 domestic comps beat UBS’s 2.5% projection and management guides to stable or accelerating comps in fiscal 2027, a defined-risk long call spread targeting the $3,100 area within 30 days captures recovery without open-ended exposure to further downside. UBS has argued that earnings growth can reaccelerate in fiscal 2027 if the model executes.

Bear case: For traders expecting the comp miss to materialize and guidance to disappoint, a defined-risk put spread below the $2,800 level positions for continuation of the year-to-date trend. The September technical low near $2,815 is the key level. A close below it extends downside toward $2,739.

Neutral/premium collection case: Given the IV premium versus typical earnings-day realized volatility, a short iron condor centered on the current price, using wings wide enough to cover the historical average move of 5.6%, frames the potential vol crush on both sides. The risk is that a severe comp miss or guidance cut produces a move resembling May 2026.

Risk Analysis and Forward Outlook

The primary risk is a comp miss paired with cautious fiscal 2027 guidance. In that scenario the implied move can understate the reaction, as May 2026 demonstrated. Secondary risks include continued LIFO charges if parts cost inflation persists, and margin compression from operating expense deleverage. On the other side, an upside surprise on comps, particularly any evidence that July-August exit rates accelerated, could still force a sharp unwind of hedges and bearish positioning.

Peer read-across matters. O’Reilly Automotive (ORLY) and Genuine Parts (GPC) face the same aftermarket demand environment. Advance Auto Parts (AAP) has already shown how badly a revenue miss can land: shares plunged more than 20% on August 20, 2026 after investors fixated on a revenue shortfall. AutoZone’s commercial business provides a relative buffer AAP does not have. That distinction will shape how the sector trades off today’s release.

Action Checklist

  • Confirm actual Q4 domestic same-store sales vs. the 3.6% Street consensus and UBS’s 2.5% projection
  • Check Q4 gross margin against the 51.5% year-ago benchmark and the guided 45-basis-point LIFO drag
  • Review fiscal 2027 comparable sales guidance: stable, accelerating, or absent
  • Monitor commercial vs. DIY split for evidence of segment mix shift
  • Track intraday price move relative to the 9.7% implied threshold for vol crush vs. vol expansion assessment
  • Watch ORLY and GPC for sympathy moves that confirm or contradict the AZO-specific read
