Gilead and Incyte Surged When the Nasdaq Fell. Take Note.

Biotech and healthcare led the week while software slid. Was it real rotation or just timing?

Friday’s session handed investors an unusually clean picture. The Nasdaq fell 2.86%. Meanwhile, Gilead Sciences rose 4.26% to $172.67, and Incyte added 4.14% to $121.63. When two pharmaceutical names rip on the Nasdaq’s down day, the market is at least trying to say something.

Zoom out to the full week and the picture sharpens. Biotech (XBI) gained about 4.3%, and healthcare (XLV) rose about 3.1%, while the S&P 500 fell about 0.6% for the week. Crucially, the equal-weight S&P finished the week positive even as the cap-weighted index declined, which tells you breadth held up while the largest technology names dragged the headline number lower.

What Actually Moved the Money

The software wreckage had specific causes. ServiceNow and Fortinet’s outlooks heightened AI jitters, and software stocks tumbled as a result. Disappointing results and guidance elsewhere in mega-cap tech then intensified the selling on Friday, raising fresh concerns about the cost of the AI build-out. The market’s patience with the spend-first, profit-later model of artificial intelligence ran short by the final week of October.

The biotech moves, by contrast, were driven by fundamentals arriving on schedule. Gilead reported third-quarter earnings and revenue above Wall Street consensus, and it said it raised full-year 2026 base business revenue guidance again. Incyte’s story was more nuanced: results topped analyst estimates on revenue, with total revenue rising 14% year over year to $1.557 billion, though its updated full-year guidance discussion left less room than bulls wanted. The stock still finished the week sharply higher. Investors, it seems, are now paying for proven commercial growth in pharma rather than extrapolated multiples in software.

What the Market May Be Missing

The more interesting question is whether this is an allocation decision or a coincidence of earnings calendars. One data point favors the structural read: XBI has added roughly 22.76% year-to-date and is up about 39% over the past twelve months. That is not a single-week quirk. Moderna has surged into the triple digits this year. The catalyst was its personalized mRNA cancer vaccine program with Merck, which on August 19, 2026 reported positive topline Phase 3 results in resected melanoma and reset the sector’s earnings potential in investors’ minds.

What deserves more attention is the divergence between XBI and XLV. XBI is equal-weight across roughly 165 biotechs. XLV is cap-weighted and dominated by managed care and device names. On Friday, several of XLV’s largest holdings, including Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and Gilead, were among the names pushing the sector higher. That is not a defensive rotation into bond proxies. That is active buying of companies with visible pipeline catalysts and earnings power.

Risks and Counterpoints

The bear case is straightforward. Gilead and Incyte both reported earnings this week, so their gains are at least partly explained by company-specific beats rather than a broader capital allocation shift. Mizuho’s Jared Holz has argued that market rotation is a prevalent factor in healthcare outperformance, which still leaves open the question of whether that rotation is durable or a single-week response to tech earnings disappointment. One bad week for software does not confirm a regime change. If Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft resolve their AI spending concerns in the next quarter, capital may flow back just as quickly.

Moderna also carries binary risk heading into November. With earnings due November 6, the next significant move may hinge not on the quarterly results but on updates tied to its personalized cancer vaccine program. A negative readout would test whether this week’s rotation was conviction or just a trade.

What to Watch Next

Three things will clarify whether this week was signal or noise. First, watch whether XBI holds its gains as sector-wide earnings season completes and the stock-specific fuel runs out. Second, watch IGV: software was the epicenter of the selloff, and any stabilization there would reduce the contrast that made healthcare look so attractive this week. Third, Moderna’s November 6 report and any accompanying pipeline commentary will either confirm that the mRNA cancer franchise justifies the year’s extraordinary run, or hand back some of it. The week of October 26 was a rotation worth watching. Whether it becomes one worth acting on depends on what those next data points say.
